Monument a Macías O Namorado (Botanical Garden of Padrón)

Macías o Namorado

A granite sculpture of Macías O Namorado. Macías is credited with writing 21 poems included in Cancionero de Baena (Madrid, 1851, and Leipzig, 1860): “Cautivo da miña tristura,”, “Amor cruel e brioso,”, “Senhora en quien fiança,”, “Provei de buscar mesura,” “Con tan alto poderío.” His life is linked to a tragic love story.

The artwork was created by the Padrón sculptor and restorer Alfonso Sanmartín Abelleira (1924-1983). This artist made twelve of the seventeen stone crosses that make up the Sea-River Way of the Cross, which forms part of the Route of the Sea of Arousa and River Ulla (1960). It is worth highlighting the ensemble of three stone crosses dedicated to the Santiago and his two disciples, Athanasius and Theodore. Alfonso Sanmartín was also the creator of the commemorative plaque in honour of Rosalía de Castro, located on a building in Rúa Juan Rodríguez de Padrón.
