“Pesqueiras” on the Ulla River
“Pesqueiras” are traditional stone structures that were used in artisanal lamprey fishing. They are normally 3 metres tall and 2 metres wide.
The concession authorising their use for fishing dates from a 9th-century document, although they probably originated in Roman times.
The gaps (called “boquetes”) that exist between each construction is used to install nets, which trap the lampreys as they swim upstream to spawn. These cylinder-shaped nets are called “butróns.”
The Ulla River fishing season lasts from January to April.
You can see two series of “pesqueiras” from the bridge crossing the river; the ones downstream are called “As Areas” and the ones upstream “As Bellas”.
