Roman bridge
As we enter Padrón from the south, via the province of Pontevedra, we will cross the waters of the famous River Ulla over a bridge whose foundations date from Roman times. It currently consists of 13 openings, some with pointed vaults and others that are semi-circular. Despite the alterations made to the structure over the years, it is still possible to appreciate the majesty of the Roman period.
It was built between the year 25 BC and the first century AD, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Octavian Augustus. A key communication structure, the most important renovation since its construction was carried out in the year 1161 by Maestro Mateo, who also designed the the Pórtico de la Gloria.
The Ulla is the natural border between the provinces of Pontevedra and Coruña; the bridge links the two provinces and especially the two neighbouring towns of Pontecesures and Padron, thereby becoming a symbol of unity.
