Monumento á Pementeira

A Pementeira

A tribute from Padrón Town Council to the women that harvest peppers, made by the sculptor Ramón Conde.

Padrón’s climate and rainfall make it the ideal place for growing peppers, especially its renowned Herbón Peppers. It was the Franciscan friars in the Convent of Herbón that brought the seeds from their missions to America in the 16th and 17th centuries. The local women then started growing this product. The Herbón Pepper now enjoys its own Protected Designation of Origin.

The “Festa do Pemento de Herbón” (Herbón Pepper Festival), which is a regional Festival of Tourist Interest, is held on the first Saturday in August. Every year, there is a parade of decorated tractors that begins in Herbón and ends with a flower offering before this statue.
