Summer in Padrón

During the summer months, Padrón Town Council’s Culture Department organises different musical and theatre performances, puppets, circus… for families.

Each municipal sports school presents a short exhibition, featuring what they have learned during the year. At the end of the event, all participants receive a commemorative medal.

All children ages 6 to 13 can participate in the summer sports campus, which mainly consists of outdoor activities: trekking, cycling routes, traditional games, water activities, nature activities, etc.

A non-competitive cycling route around Padrón and surrounding parishes, for all the family. It features awards and prize lotteries.

A medieval festival held in Padrón’s old town. Apart from the market, featuring numerous stands with a range of foods and crafts, the publicenjoysdifferent exhibitions, activities and children’s workshops. There is also street entertainment featuring musicians, jesters, jugglers, artisans, falconry, etc.

A festival in honour of Rosalía de Castro. The programme features a range of cultural activities for all ages: conferences, poetry recitals, concerts, theatre, presentations, performances, etc.

A parody of English horse races, turning Padrón into a place of laughter and glamour. Its participants are growing in number and colourfulness year after year. For this special occasion, people dress in traditional British style, featuring sun hats and exaggerated, decorated parasols. This original event also includes music, workshops and other activities for all ages.

A traditional pilgrimage that is held on July 24 and 25, being closely linked to the Way of St. James tradition and the Apostle James. It is held in the surroundings of a chapel of the same name and on some crags, which, according to tradition, was where the Apostle James preached to the local inhabitants. It is a unique setting to spend a few days as a family, enjoying the bagpipe players, “big heads” and grilled sardines accompanied by sausage buns and cornbread. It is worth mentioning thevery popular Asnal Derby that is held on the afternoon of July 24. There is also Pilgrim Day ,which pays tribute to the tireless walkers that have left their mark on Padrón over the centuries.

A festival, declared to be of Galician Tourist Interest, that promotes the Herbón pepper. It has been held since 1978. The festive day features a full programme of activities: outdoor mass, opening and blessing of the festival, agricultural parade as far as Padrón, reception of the authorities and flower offering to the statue of the “Pementeira” (pepper grower), reading of the opening speech, awarding of the Silver Peppers and the New Pepper Grower and Wise Pepper Grower prizes, awarding of prizes for the best-decorated tractors, free sampling of Herbón peppers, music and open-air dance.

A marine tribute to the poetess Rosalía de Castro. Traditional Galician boats go up the Sar River as far as the O Espolón walkway. There, near Santiago Bridge, the sails are raised to the sound of bagpipes playing the “Ancient Kingdom of Galicia March.” The event ends with a flower offering to the statue of Rosalía.
